Ayurveda, which translates to the “science of life,” is a traditional system of medicine that originated in India thousands of years ago. One of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda is the belief that each person is unique, and therefore, there is no “one size fits all” approach to health and wellness. Ayurvedic diet, which is tailored to an individual’s specific dosha, is a key component of this holistic system.

What’s Your Dosha?

The three doshas, or energetic qualities, that are believed to govern the human body are Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. According to Ayurvedic theory, everyone has a unique combination of these doshas, which determine their physical, mental, and emotional characteristics. Each dosha is associated with specific qualities, such as dryness or warmth, and foods that have similar qualities can either balance or aggravate that dosha.

The first step in adopting an Ayurvedic diet is to determine your dominant dosha, which can be done ideally through a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner, a certified Ayurvedic nutritionist, or a coach. Alternatively, you can start your journey by taking a dosha quiz online. Once you know your dosha, you can begin to make dietary choices that will support your overall health and well-being.

Vata Dosha: Air and Space

If you have a Vata-dominant constitution, when your primary dosha is vitiated, you may tend towards dry skin, irregular digestion, and anxiety. To regain your balance, it is recommended to incorporate warming, nourishing, and grounding foods into your diet. This includes cooked grains, root vegetables, warming spices like ginger and cinnamon, and healthy oils like ghee and sesame.

Pitta Dosha: Fire and Water

Those with a Pitta-dominant constitution, when vitiated, tend towards inflammation, irritability, perfectionism, and skin irritations. To balance this dosha, it is recommended to incorporate cooling, hydrating, and calming foods into your diet. This includes juicy fruits, leafy greens, cooling spices like coriander and fennel, and healthy oils like coconut and olive.

Kapha Dosha: Water and Earth

For those with a Kapha-dominant constitution, you may tend towards sluggish digestion, unwanted weight gain, and depression. To balance this dosha, it is recommended to incorporate light, dry, and stimulating foods into your diet. This includes legumes, bitter greens, pungent spices like black pepper and cumin, and fruits with high water content.

In addition to foods based on your dosha, Ayurveda suggests adjusting your diet to the current season, as well as your climate. According to this, during the summer months, especially if you have strong Pitta qualities, it is best to follow a Pitta-balancing diet, and early spring would call for a Kapha-pacifying diet. Ayurveda also emphasizes mindful eating practices, such as eating in a calm and peaceful environment, chewing your food thoroughly, and not eating too much or too little. Ayurvedic practitioners may also recommend periodic fasting or detoxification programs to support overall health and wellness.

In conclusion, adopting an Ayurvedic diet can be a powerful tool for improving your health and well-being. By eating according to your dosha and incorporating mindful eating practices, you can support your body’s natural healing processes and prevent disease.

HELLO REAL LIFE!

Welcome! My name is Ivy. Classical with a twist, married to the love of my life, a proud mum of two little lions, and one little human. We have recently moved to the gorgeous state of Washington.

My practice, Ivy Chan Wellness, unites ancient wisdom with modern knowledge. I was born into a family in the Middle East, my roots run deep with the knowledge of my ancestors—nomadic healers who passed down their wisdom through the generations. But my path led me on a different journey, one that would intertwine my passion for education with my quest for healing.

With a Ph.D. in Sociology, and a passion for nurturing minds, I have always seen myself as an educator. I believe in empowering individuals to become their own healers, rewrite their stories and redefine their relationship with their bodies, their hearts, and their overall well-being.

Through years of study and self-discovery, I have cultivated expertise in women’s health and wellness. My focus lies in helping my sisters find their most powerful selves at every stage of their lives. I want us not just to survive, but to thrive!

At Ivy Can Wellness, you will discover a sanctuary for transformation and growth. It is a place where the ancient traditions of healing seamlessly blend with the latest knowledge in Ayurvedic nutrition, yoga therapy, and holistic wellness. There, you will find the tools, resources, and guidance you need to embark on your personal journey of healing and self-discovery.

Shakingmytofu, on the other hand, aims to make plant-based life convenient, affordable, and adaptable for everyone. I will be happy if I can bring a little more light, health, and peace to the daily life. Feel free to spend time, and have a look at the recipes, lists of plant-based sources (from snacks to clothing), images and articles.

I invite you to embark on this extraordinary journey of self-discovery and well-being with me. Together, let’s shape our stories, rewrite our narratives, and embrace a life of vitality, joy, and balance.

Contact me anytime with queries, suggestions, and collaboration ideas at shakingmytofu@gmail.com or simply by filling out the form below. Look forward to hearing from you!
