How do your mornings look like?

I will recommend to you an easy, quick, healthy, and a delicious breakfast smoothie.

But before that:

Hello to all parents out there! Greetings to those walking the dog, feeding the cat, playing with the kid; hello to those who are used to being stuck in traffic every morning. A special hello to my fellow New Yorkers, riding the A train, the 2/3 train, or the 4/5 train. I see you. I hear you. I imagine your mornings.

For the sake of simplicity, I have two likely scenarios for you.

Which one are you?

Scenario numero 1: You wake up, brush your teeth, have your lemon water (or rose water:)), pet the furry babies, kiss the human baby. You are running late because you have this 9 am meeting (and all 9 am meetings should be criminalized) and it is 8 am already. It is all The Crown‘s fault. You had to binge on a show on the history of the British monarchy (you stop for a moment while grinding coffee beans to wonder why it is still called a kingdom even though they have a Queen for the last 60+ years).

The girl (the human one, not the cat one) needs new leggings. You cannot believe how fast she has grown. Not fast enough to ride the train to school, so you have to take her to school first, then take the West Side Highway to work. You remember those old days, your morning runs north along the Highway to take epic views of the George Washington Bridge. When was the last time you did that? Maybe you should start running again when the Spring comes? Anyway, you can get a new pair of leggings on the way from work. But you have to take her to school now. What are you going to eat? You sigh. You need more sleep, much more sleep, or a B12 shot, or something.

Scenario numero 2: You wake up. You have some time to check your emails before getting out of bed. Work emails, emails from family, your brother, Aunty Lilly- hah, Aunty Lilly rarely emails you. You wonder what it is about. Click on the lengthy link she has included in the email- the email ends with a “hugs and kisses from us all”. She is one of your favourite relatives and has a great sense of humour. The link directs you to a short video which has recently got viral on Instagram. You know, that video about that cute dog named Riptide “working out” alongside a group of women.

You smile again, even though you have seen it at least a few times already. You remember a recent conversation with a colleague about the term “beach body”. The two of you are supposed to see each other in less than an hour, but you forward the video to her anyway. Doing that, you come across a few more videos on Instagram and then remember that you have not responded to Aunty Lilly. So you send her a short, funny note about how you have “lost” your “beach body” but your summer mind is perfectly safe and sound. Then you get out of bed and realize it is past 9 am already. You really hate that cereal, looking miserably at you from the top of the counter. You really hate it. It is too “blah” and you need more inspiration right now, a B12 shot, or something.

Bluebs-banana something- Easy, fast, healthy, delicious

My dear friend who hates 9 am meetings as much as anyone except for your CEO, I hereby present to you that “something”.

This is NOTHING but berries, bananas and, only if you need an additional “oomph” a handful of oats, and any liquid sweetener, like agave.  To be honest, I usually blend a pack of frozen blueberries with two bananas, sometimes frozen, sometimes fresh, depending on what we have in the kitchen that day, and that’s it. No time, and no need, for anything else.

Why eat bananas?

We should not need a reason other than “they are delicious!”. But if I did need to convince you, here we go. First of all, bananas are known for their high potassium content, which is necessary for quality nerve and muscle function, and prevention of cramps. You will need all that, rushing to that meeting, won’t you? Bananas have a have good amount of fiber which keeps you full longer, and helps with digestion, and manganese which is crucial for bone health and metabolism. My favourite reason for banana fandom is the vitamin B-6 content. They are an excellent source of B-6 vitamins the body uses to grow new cells. The kid might be growing fast, but no reason for you to not stay youthful is there?!

Why blueberries?

My favourite berries are blackberries and I had never tasted either blueberries or blackberries before coming to US. (I had tasted mulberries, which I love. I also knew bilberries, and I still pronounce blueberries as bilberries which make people frown). So I think I’ve been trying to close the gap of my berry consumption since then! It is so worth it though: Blueberries are low in calories, high in fiber and antioxidant capacity. They may protect against DNA damage and aging- again, the best of news. So much to see and do in this world! They may also lower blood pressure. Eye care, preventing cancer, heart diseases and immunity…Just google “blueberry benefits” and read in awe if you are not satisfied.

On the go breakfast

I am a foodie, and a jar of smoothie (or two) is not enough for me, regardless of any 9 am meeting (shrug). So I also take with me nuts and seeds on the train to work. But there is no way of eating two bananas and a pack of bluebs during the morning rush hour on the train. Let me know if you have tips for me, my fellow New Yorkers. If you want an incredibly delicious and a healthy breakfast on-the-go, give this smoothie a try. You will love it!

Oh, a bonus tip: You might like to add spirulina, green tea, or matcha for an additional pick-me-up.

HELLO REAL LIFE!

Welcome! My name is Ivy. Classical with a twist, married to the love of my life, a proud mum of two little lions, and one little human. We have recently moved to the gorgeous state of Washington.

My practice, Ivy Chan Wellness, unites ancient wisdom with modern knowledge. I was born into a family in the Middle East, my roots run deep with the knowledge of my ancestors—nomadic healers who passed down their wisdom through the generations. But my path led me on a different journey, one that would intertwine my passion for education with my quest for healing.

With a Ph.D. in Sociology, and a passion for nurturing minds, I have always seen myself as an educator. I believe in empowering individuals to become their own healers, rewrite their stories and redefine their relationship with their bodies, their hearts, and their overall well-being.

Through years of study and self-discovery, I have cultivated expertise in women’s health and wellness. My focus lies in helping my sisters find their most powerful selves at every stage of their lives. I want us not just to survive, but to thrive!

At Ivy Can Wellness, you will discover a sanctuary for transformation and growth. It is a place where the ancient traditions of healing seamlessly blend with the latest knowledge in Ayurvedic nutrition, yoga therapy, and holistic wellness. There, you will find the tools, resources, and guidance you need to embark on your personal journey of healing and self-discovery.

Shakingmytofu, on the other hand, aims to make plant-based life convenient, affordable, and adaptable for everyone. I will be happy if I can bring a little more light, health, and peace to the daily life. Feel free to spend time, and have a look at the recipes, lists of plant-based sources (from snacks to clothing), images and articles.

I invite you to embark on this extraordinary journey of self-discovery and well-being with me. Together, let’s shape our stories, rewrite our narratives, and embrace a life of vitality, joy, and balance.

Contact me anytime with queries, suggestions, and collaboration ideas at shakingmytofu@gmail.com or simply by filling out the form below. Look forward to hearing from you!
